What is Leadership

What is leadership? What are the different leadership styles? What are the leadership skills that can boost one’s effectiveness at work and in all social situations? What leadership qualities define a good leader? There are many leadership quotes and leadership training that point to the importance of evolving work and personal skills. And then there is management. What is Management? Do we need to separate leadership and management roles? Where does one start to meet the other? John C. Maxwell, leadership expert, author, and speaker explains, “leadership cannot be awarded, appointed, and assigned,” and that a leader “knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” These definitions draw the distinctions between the leadership and management functions. Managers delegate and manage, leaders inspire. Managers are focused on the work at hand; leaders set their sights on the horizon. Managers are task-oriented, leaders are visionary.
A good balance in the number of managers and leaders is the key to running an organization smoothly. Though leadership and management are separate functions, a good mix of managerial qualities and leadership skills may be found in talented members of your team. Yes, leaders can be good managers, and some managers do make strong leaders.
